When Mom is Sick

When Mom is Sick

sick momThe past two weeks I have been dealing with sick kids. I’ve had 6 sick kids laying on the floor, cuddled under blankets, and some that still need mom to wipe their nose. I don’t mind taking care of sickies… but it became a lot harder when I got sick. It’s really not a fair thing that mom’s get sick especially when trying to take care of others. I can’t call into work and then hide under my covers all day or veg in front of the TV with my water bottle and a box of tissues. Oh no… when I’m sick people still need to eat, and diapers still need to be changed, and when you run out of juice in the middle of the day Mom is the one that has to go get it. Blah!!!

I have found some things that have made life a little easier when I am sick and can’t do a whole lot, this is also helpful when I have a houseful of sickies, and I’m the one doing it all.

First… do bare minimum. Life is still going on, sick or not the things mentioned above still need to be done.  Yes to changing diapers… No to washing windows. The sticky finger prints will still be there when you are better, so let it pass.  Pull out the paper plates, don’t so any more dishes than you have to, and unless there is vomit, mopping is over rated when you are sick.

Make easy meals! I always have stuff on hand for cereal, grilled cheese sandwiches, oatmeal, or scrambled eggs. These things are quick, easy, filling and I know my kids will eat them, I’ll cut up an apple, to serve with all the meals as well. The meal is done, and tummies are full, all with relatively little effort from me.

While I don’t do major cleaning… it’s to much effort when I don’t feel good. Every morning I make a quick round with some cleaning wipes and wipe down door knobs, light switches, and handrails. The things that get touched all the time by sick hands. I also keep a couple laundry baskets around, one for clothes, or blankets or whatever that is found around the house that needs t be washed, and another for things that need to be put away. This way the mess stays in some control. When I feel better I have things that are ready to put away, but I didn’t have to look at a messy house while I am not feeling good.

Open windows, I like to get the stagnate air moving out of the house and for me on sunny days you’ll find me by a window in the sun, also… lots of water and I try to remember to take my vitamins. And I will also see my chiropractor, making sure that my body is aligned right will help me be on the mend faster.

The last thing… Ask for help! If your neighbor offers to pick something up from the store for you, let her. Give her your list, {star the juice so it doesn’t get forgotten} and let her grab the things you need. Ask your spouse to make lunches for everyone, and put things in plastic bags so it will be ok until lunch time. If you have older kids who are not sick have them pitch in with the cleaning and meals… even a 6 year old can pour cereal and vacuum.

Being sick as a mom is just wrong!! But it happeneds…. we need to be sure to take care of ourselves just as well as we take care of others. We are important too!!
