How did your own experience becoming a mom fuel your passion to help other moms learn about sleep?

There’s nothing in our life that really prepares us for becoming a mom for the first time.  I remember thinking that I can’t believe that I’m trusted with this little, tiny human!  Who am I for such a responsibility?  One of the reasons I was afraid of becoming a mom is because I’ve always needed a lot of sleep and I knew in the back of my head that the lack of sleep would be difficult.  It was harder than that!  I was really struggling and a lot of the reason why was lack of sleep.  When I was finally rested and could see how hard it was before, I knew right then I had to help other moms with this for the rest of my life.  I felt a calling to do what I do and it comes from a powerful place in me.  Helping families truly makes my heart happier.

Why is sleep scientifically ESSENTIAL for growing kids ages 4 to 10?

Most children between the ages of 5-12 get about 9.5 hours of sleep, but experts agree that they need more like 10-11 hours each night.  So many amazing things happen when a child sleeps – sleep maintains healthy blood sugar, regulates hormones, boosts the immune system, and uplifts our mental well-being creating feelings of happiness. Sleep is the ultimate power boost for children’s bodies.  Memory is improved and we’re more able to make good decisions.  Lack of sleep in children has been linked to obesity and ADHD.

Does the amount of sleep differ as they grow? Is there a sliding scale?

Yes, there is a sliding scale.  3-5, 12 hours of sleep and 5-12 10-11 hours of sleep.  There’s a huge shift in sleep needs from the teenage years until the age of about 25.  The entire circadian rhythm changes for about 10 years.  Most school-age children simply not getting enough rest.  Parents greatly underestimate how much sleep they need and how much sleep their children need.

What is your tip for us moms trying to get activities in, cook dinner, do homework and get them down in time?  Is there a magical formula?!

In our house, sleep is non-negotiable.  It’s our number one priority because it affects everything we do.  We’re super busy and manage to get everything in so that my children can be lights out at 7:45pm.
Is there a point when kids are too old to be good sleepers?
SOOO many moms think their children are too old to become good sleepers and it’s not true!  I’ve worked with children as old as 10 and the good news is that it’s not too late!   Sleep is a skill and I am here to help you and your family develop these healthy sleep habits to Make Motherhood Easier, Healthier and Happier!
